English as lingua franca (ELF) is now a given in academic and professional contexts owing to the unprecedented spread of this language worldwide. Since the majority of communicative exchanges takes place between non-native speakers, such a development challenges native speaker norms at various levels (e.g. phonological, lexical, grammatical, and so on), thus leading to new varieties and forms of contamination and creativity. The aim of the project is to explore those features which problematize the very essence of ELF: on the one hand, they are taken as accommodation and remedial strategies deployed by non-native speakers; on the other hand, they may hinder mutual understanding, especially when it comes to specialized discourse.
