The Turin research group (Metaphor and Media Communication), coordinated by Paola Paissa, focuses on the intrinsically conflictual nature of the metaphor. The notion of conflict is envisaged both in an epistemological sense, as the metaphor is the outcome of a ‘conceptual conflict’, and in a ‘metaphorical’ sense, since the metaphor is a powerful tool in argumentative discourse. Drawing on different corpora, our studies explored the multiple metaphorical forms and interactions. In particular, they observe the role of the metaphor in political and media discourse, where this figure contributes to the success of the persuasive act. A potentially controversial vision of the world, embodying the viewpoint of the metaphorical utterance, is thereby achieved.
